“Ready?” Hestie asked Poros on the upper deck of The Marcella.

“Wait. Hold on.” Poros conjured a weapon—a sword, but not the one Hephaestus had recently given to him. Handing it over to Hermie, he said, “Take this. Just in case.”

Hermie’s face paled.

“You probably won’t need it,” Hestie said. “As soon as you anchor, the three of you can hide in the hull. Okay?”

Hermie and the twins nodded.

“No worries,” Jinsoo said. “We got this.”

“Keep praying to the others,” Hestie added. “Especially to Hecate. She could do a cloaking spell on the ship.”

“Will do,” Hermie said.

Poros took Hestie’s hand.

She tried to act naturally and to not let on how thrilled she was to be touching him as she said, “We’ll be right back.”

Then she imagined the woods outside her Grammie’s house in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, and, in the next instant, she and Poros were there.

Whereas dusk had arrived in Greece, it was still the late morning of the previous day in the San Juan Mountains. The sky wasn’t overcast, like it had been on the sea. Helios was ascending in his cup toward high noon.

Without saying a word, Hestie led Poros down the hill toward the cabin, listening with her goddess ears for anything unusual. She approached the garage, finding the side door unlocked, as usual. She opened it and was surprised to see both of her grandparents’ cars. If they were home, there would be a television or a radio playing. It was too quiet.

She led Poros through the basement and upstairs to the main level, to the kitchen. She was startled by the whistling sound of a teapot on the stove. She turned off the burner and then looked around the living room.

Grammie’s laptop lay, opened, on the floor near her chair. Grampie’s newspaper was covered in milk beside an overturned bowl. Hestie’s heart danced with fear as she crossed the room to search their bedroom. Finding no one there, she took the stairs to Lynn’s room. Lynn’s phone lay on the floor near her opened door.

“Someone took them,” Hestie said.

“Zeus,” Poros said. “He must have learned that she’s a seer.”

“What do we do?”

“Let’s go find your parents.”

He took her hand, and they were enveloped by the pressure of god travel before they landed in his cabin in the hull of The Marcella. They went looking for the others and, finding them on the upper deck, still navigating toward the tip of Greece, Hestie filled them in one what they had seen.

“You think Zeus has them?” Hermie asked.

Hestie and Poros nodded.

“But we’ll get them back,” Poros added.

“First, we’re going to look for Mom and Dad,” Hestie said. “We better go.”

The others followed Hestie and Poros to the lower deck, where the dinghy was stored.

“Be careful,” Mina said.

“We’ll see you soon,” Jinsoo added.

Hestie felt as if she’d lost her tongue as she and Poros climbed into the dinghy and took off.

After more than twenty minutes, the island came into view. Hestie could make out the rocky beach, rolling hills, and thick jungle toward the island’s center.
